With the cruise season in full swing this year, passengers preparing to embark are advised to carefully consider where they will spend the night to ensure a peaceful sleep. Experts from WinstonsBeds.com have shared seven valuable tips to maximize rest during sea voyages.
For those embarking on a cruise for the first time, sleep quality can be a concern. Those sensitive to seasickness, in particular, are encouraged to book a room on the lower deck, where the swaying of the waves is less noticeable.
Rebecca Swain, a sleep and mattress expert from WinstonsBeds, warned newcomers: “If you are new to cruising, you may find it difficult to sleep during the first few nights. You will need to give yourself time to adjust to sleeping in a new room and a new location.”
Room choice is crucial, advises Swain, suggesting avoiding rooms with balconies for those uncomfortable with the idea of sleeping over open waters. Additionally, it is recommended to keep the cabin cool, at around 19 degrees Celsius, for ideal sleep.
“It’s also worth choosing a room away from restaurants and elevators to minimize any disturbances during the night. Also, pay attention to what is above and below your room and try to stay away from bars or places that might be a bit noisier at night,” she adds.
Other tips include bringing a sleep mask and earplugs to block out noise and light during the night and making the bed as comfortable as possible, requesting extra pillows, blankets, and an additional mattress if necessary.
Lastly, although cruise ships are designed to minimize movement, it is advisable to give yourself time to adjust to the new sleeping environment.
