3 Best Mediterranean Attractions

There are many islands and resorts throughout the Mediterranean Sea, with 22 sovereign states and territories that are popular tourist destinations, which have their own flair and appeal.

Read Sada Elbald English suggestions for the best places to stay by vacation type below, or scroll down for a more detailed look at Mediterranean cities, and islands.

Alexandria, Egypt

3 Best Mediterranean Attractions

Alexandria, the largest of the Egyptian coastal cities, has been a Mediterranean vacation hot spot for decades.

The Alexandria Coast is a Seventy-kilometer-long section of Egyptian coastline stretching between the north-western side of the Nile delta (Town El-Dekhila) to Mariout Lake (Town Abu-Qir) in the east.

It is backed by an undulating sandy escarpment with marvelous cliffs and intercut by deep valleys terminating in bays lined with fishing villages. It is, according to UNESCO, an outstanding example of a Mediterranean landscape.

There are several districts along the Alexandria Coast you really should see while you are there. Alexandria is a maze of massive streets and has a fascinating citadel called “Qaitbay”.

El-Montazh is a cliffside district with impressive sea views, an iconic Palace dating to the Khedive Ismail era, and extensive Royal gardens.

Alanfoushi is the iconic town that gives its name to the entire coastline. Its most prominent feature is the Abu al-Abbas al-Mursi Mosque domes and minarets which tower over the town and beach.

To escape the hordes visit the lesser-known, but equally picturesque village of Agami.

The hiking route running from the Sidi Besher neighborhood to the Abu al-Abbas al-Mursi Mosque site is a gentle trek that rewards walkers with indescribable views of the Alexandria Coast alongside its iconic Bibliotheca and Qaitbay Citadel in the Bay of Pharos.

Malta

3 Best Mediterranean Attractions

Malta is a fantastic island which, as well as having some stunning beaches, is rich in cultural activities and has some magnificent natural wonders.

In addition to this, Malta has a reasonably stable climate all year round with only moderate temperature increases in the summer months and occasional lows in winter.

If sightseeing rather than sunbathing is on your agenda, then October through to March are the best months to go.

The renowned Mediterranean country draws plenty of visitors no matter what time of the year it is so don’t expect to find the streets deserted whenever you go.

Crete, Greece

3 Best Mediterranean Attractions

Crete, which is the largest and most populous of the Greek islands and the fifth-largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, after Sicily, Sardinia, Cyprus, and Corsica, is a supermodel when it comes to pristine beaches. Stay in the Heraklion no less than picture-perfect beaches, with sublime turquoise seas lapping against stunning coves.

The largest stretches, Heraklion and Chania, are hubs for archeological tours, water sports, sun lounges, and sailing.

There’s even a tourist road train to make paradise cove-hopping extra easy. If you are a keen explorer, so you should figure out its towns and villages or visit the monuments, ruins, and museums to discover more about the fascinating Greek culture.

From here, escape into the Aradaina Gorge Valley for serene scenes and tranquil coves away from the hustle and bustle.
