Senegal will recycle 200 tons of plastic

Proplast Industrie will recycle 200 tons of plastic waste per year in Senegal. This is the aim of a partnership signed on November 18th, 2021 with the Solid Waste Coordination and Management Unit (UCG), the public body that manages waste in this West African country.

Senegal will recycle 200 tons of plastic

After the launch in September 2020 of “Récuplast”, a collection and sales system for plastic waste and products from recycling in Dakar, Senegal, Proplast Industrie has a new mission in the country. According to the partnership agreement recently signed with the Solid Waste Coordination and Management Unit (UCG), the Senegalese recycling company will now have to reach the quota of 200 tons of recycled plastic waste per year.

As the public body responsible for the cleaning, collection and transport of household waste in Senegal, the UCG will provide Proplast Industrie with the raw material, i.e. plastic waste. “In addition to collecting the waste at standardized neighbourhood collection points, the UCG will sort it before transporting it to Proplast Industrie’s production lines,” explains Mass Thiam, the UCG coordinator.

Among the products manufactured by Proplast Industrie from recycled plastic are stools, tables, packaging, etc. By recovering plastic waste in Senegal, the UCG hopes to reduce the costs dedicated to sanitation and curb pollution. In 2019 alone, the West African country produced more than 4 million tons of waste with a direct impact on the climate through methane emissions, according to the UCG. This project will also create new jobs.

The work done by Proplast Industrie complements another initiative implemented by the SCU in Senegal. This is the Project for the promotion of integrated management and economy of solid waste (Promoged). Launched in May 2021, the project involves the creation of seven technical landfills, standardized consolidation points, and solid waste sorting and transfer centers. Promoged will also contribute to the rehabilitation of some landfills in Senegal, including the Mbeubeuss site located near the Senegalese capital Dakar.
