Nigeria: FEC approves NNPC, ECOWAS gas pipeline agreement
The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has given the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) approval to sign an agreement with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) for the construction of the Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline.
The announcement was made by Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, H.E. Chief Timipre Sylva, under the authority of FEC Vice President, H.E. Yemi Osinbajo, at the Presidential Villa in Nigeria’s capital, Abuja, on May 25, 2022.
H.E. Minister Sylva clarified that the Nigeria-Morocco pipeline project was still at the early stage of front-end engineering design, with costing to be determined thereafter.
Spanning 15 west African countries and ending in Cádiz, a south-western city in Spain, the pipeline will enable Nigeria to supply the connected 15 countries with gas while tapping into European markets.
This month, three memoranda were presented by the Ministry of Petroleum Resources to the FEC, the first of which comprises the approval for the Nigeria-Morocco gas pipeline.
Additional approvals included the construction of a switchgear room and installation of power distribution cables and equipment for the Nigerian oil and gas park in Ogbia, Bayelsa State, worth N3.8 billion and contracts for the construction of an access road, inclusive of bridges, to the Brass Petroleum Product Deport in Inibomoyekiri, south of Nigeria.
