Angola SonaGás and OPAIA launch fertilizer industrial complex

SonaGás, a subsidiary of Sonangol, and business group Opaia, in the municipality of Soyo, Zaire, are due to launch on June 28 the construction of a fertilizer industrial complex.

The project, which is funded by Afreximbank-African Bank for Exports and Imports, will have production capacity of 3,500 tons of granulated urea per day, according to a statement to which ANGOP had access.

It is expected to create over three direct and indirect jobs.

With the technical assistance of the Saipem company, the construction of the complex will allow for the promotion of national agricultural production, as well as improving the standard of living and wellbeing of the local population.

Given the existence of a gap between urea consumption and production of 1.2 million tons in Southern and Central Africa, the project plans to give priority to the national market in supplying fertilisers.

The surplus, according to the document, will be exported to the region and African Free Trade Zone and to other countries on a global scale.

Urea is a chemical compound in the form of white crystals and has several advantages, such as containing higher nitrogen content, 46 percent, being water soluble; nitrates do not accumulate in the crop, rapid growth of vegetative mass, increased crop yield and protein content in cereal grains.
